In designing a residence in Jinbu, South Korea, we combined both the vernacular and modern systems to provide a new form of domesticity in coordination with the sun: Onsil, the Korean vernacular greenhouse that combines radiant flooring, Trombe wall, translucent paper, combined with modern materials and mechanical systems, such as polycarbonate facade and heat exhaust and intake. By synthesizing these elements, we retrofitted a vernacular system that was lost in history for modern-day use.
